About this flight
In March 2024, Asiana Airlines’ last remaining Boeing 747 aircraft was officially scheduled for final retirement.
The final flight is planned to operate from Taipei Songshan to Seoul. Therefore, my August 2023 flight on Asiana Airlines marked my last time flying on a Boeing 747.
Airlines operating the Boeing 747-400 are becoming increasingly rare. I recall seeing that some low-cost carriers in Russia, as well as airlines serving Russian resort routes, were still operating the type. Lufthansa in Germany also appears to continue flying 747-400s, though I’m not sure on which routes.
At Narita Airport, I spent some time in the ANA Suite Lounge before departure.
The scheduled departure time was 7:55 p.m., but I mistakenly thought it was 7:20 p.m., so I went to the gate early and, realizing I still had about 30 minutes, I also stopped by the United Airlines lounge.
The Royal Business cabin located at the front of the Boeing 747-400’s lower deck offered a spacious and elegant atmosphere. I enjoyed a comfortable and memorable flight, savoring every moment aboard this legendary aircraft.

You can see the departure information board in the back. The poster in the center of the board is a Chanel advertisement.
Before COVID, this spot featured ANA ads, but since the pandemic I haven’t seen ANA advertising here. It’s likely part of revenue optimization measures.

These are the dishes I picked up from the buffet counter.
- • From the appetizer section:
- * White peach and potato vichyssoise
- * Tomato and mozzarella caprese-style salad
- * Marinated horse mackerel with herbs
- • Salad (red cabbage and cherry tomatoes)
- • Chocolate butter baguette
- • Mango mousse
Sushi Set
I had a set of hand-pressed sushi.
Gratin
I also enjoyed some gratin.
View of the Apron
This is the view of the apron at Haneda Airport during dusk. The Boeing 747-400 flight for the day was scheduled to depart at 7:20 p.m., making it an evening departure. When I last flew in May 2023, the departure time was 1:20 p.m.
Outside the lounge, ANA’s Airbus A380 “FLYING HONU” No. 1 aircraft, *Lani*, was parked.

Nearby Gate
Today’s boarding gate was Gate 31, but as I reached nearby Gate 33, I could faintly see the Asiana Airlines Boeing 747-400 parked in the distance.
Gate 33 was used for Singapore Airlines’ Narita–Los Angeles flight.
The Aircraft
This is the jumbo jet — a Boeing 747 — parked at the gate. I was able to capture a nice shot of it beautifully illuminated at night.

This is the boarding gate for the Asiana Airlines flight to Incheon. I had thought the departure time was 7:20 p.m., but when I arrived, I realized it was actually 7:55 p.m.—giving me about 30 extra minutes.

Entrance
Since I still had about 30 minutes before boarding, I decided to visit the United Airlines Lounge to have a look around inside.
Food Corner
I think the dining and drink options at the United Lounge are quite impressive. There’s a wide variety of food and wine available.
Fruits and Desserts
This counter offers fruits and small desserts such as cakes.
Hot Dishes
A variety of hot dishes are also available.
- • Demi-glace hamburger steak
- • Mixed beans
- • Penne Pomodoro
Dim Sum
Several types of dim sum, including shumai, are served in these steamers.
Next to the steamers is the demi-glace hamburger from earlier.
Prosciutto and Cheese
The counter on the left features prosciutto, cheese, and similar items.
Seating Area
This is the seating area of the United Airlines Lounge.
It’s a very spacious lounge, allowing guests to relax comfortably even when it gets busy. In the past, United operated around 25 flights per day from Narita, but now it’s about 13.
Recently, there was some good news — United Airlines announced a new route from Narita to Cebu, Philippines. This will likely bring a few more visitors to the lounge.
Udon and More
This corner serves udon noodles. The udon looks delicious — you take some into a bowl and pour hot broth from a pot over it.
Inari sushi and seaweed rolls are also available.
Salad Vegetables
The salad bar section.
- • Cherry tomatoes, okra, lettuce
- • Green beans, glass noodles, corn, etc.
Penne Pomodoro
Penne Pomodoro — pasta in tomato sauce. The lid has been removed from the container here.
Cheese and Prosciutto
Once again, prosciutto and various cheeses are beautifully arranged here.

Dim Sum
Dim sum offerings.
I don’t think ANA’s lounge at Narita serves dim sum, so if you’d like to enjoy it at Narita Airport, the United Lounge is the place to go.
Sake and Wine
The drink counter.
- • Two types of Japanese sake
- • Champagne
- • Two types of white wine
This United Lounge is also accessible to business class passengers. I find it impressive that champagne is served even to business class guests here.
Red Wine and Other Spirits
The counter offering red wine and other spirits such as shochu, whiskey, brandy, and Campari.
Curry and Rice
The curry and rice station.
- • (Left pot) Curry
- • (Right rice cooker) White rice
Seating Area

Wooden crafts are displayed on the wall — perhaps from a South Pacific island. Since it was past 7 p.m., there weren’t many passengers around.
Desk Area
The desk area located near the lounge entrance.
Seating Area with Artwork
This part of the lounge also features artwork and decorative pieces, which is quite remarkable. Many Japanese and Asian-style ornaments are displayed throughout the space.
It seems designed to evoke an oriental atmosphere.
Portable Shrine Display
A portable shrine used in Japanese festivals is displayed here in the seating area.
I didn’t have much time left before boarding, so I just walked around the lounge to take a look instead of eating.

Royal Business Class Seat
Boarding completed.
This is the Royal Business Class seat located at the very front of the first floor. It’s called “Royal Business Class” to distinguish it from the regular Business Class on the upper deck. The seat is impressively large.
This area used to be the First Class section, but since Asiana Airlines discontinued First Class, it is now part of Business Class.

Amenities available in the lavatory include:
- Toothbrush set
- Mouthwash
- Hand soap
- Hand cream, etc.
Menu
This was the in-flight menu for the day. The Western option featured a beef fillet steak, while the Korean option offered bibimbap as the main course.
Salad and Dessert
I chose the Western meal. The bread served on my previous Asiana 747 flight was so delicious that I wanted to enjoy it again, so I opted for the Western course.
- • Vegetable salad with cheese and Italian dressing
- • Strawberry mousse
Bread Basket
The flight attendant brought around a bread basket.
Every piece of bread was absolutely delicious.
Main Course – Steak
- • All types of bread (4 varieties)
- • Beef fillet steak
- Served with potatoes, carrots, and broccoli
After-meal Drinks
After the meal, I enjoyed a glass of champagne and a cup of coffee.
Champagne and Snacks
Champagne served with mixed nuts as a light snack.
Royal Business Class Cabin
I managed to capture all twelve windows of the Royal Business Class section at the front of the Boeing 747.
Since there are no partitions between the seats in this section, you can really appreciate the spaciousness of the cabin. As an aviation enthusiast, this was a truly special photo to take.
