About this flight
On October 27, 2019, JAL launched its first domestic flight using the Boeing 787, operating the route between Haneda and Osaka Itami. Although JAL had been flying the 787 on international routes since April 2012, this marked its debut as a domestic-only aircraft.
A commemorative ceremony and press conference were held at Haneda Airport prior to departure.
I had the opportunity to board this inaugural flight.
The Boeing 787 is a medium-sized wide-body aircraft, featuring two aisles in the cabin.

Heading to the Boarding Gate

After passing through the security check, I walked toward the boarding gate in Haneda Airport’s Domestic Terminal 1, where I could see the aircraft on the apron along the way.
The Inaugural Flight

Here is the Boeing 787-8 that will operate today’s first domestic flight.
While JAL has been operating this aircraft on international routes for the past seven and a half years, this marks its first use as a domestic-exclusive aircraft.

JAL's Tsurumaru Logo

After boarding, I saw JAL's Tsurumaru (crane circle) logo displayed at the entrance of the aircraft.
It’s a warm welcome, greeting passengers as they enter the cabin.
Class J

Here’s a look at the Class J seating.
While it doesn’t reach the level of First Class, the extra legroom and wider seat pitch make it a very comfortable option for a domestic flight.
Economy Class

This is the Economy Class seating layout.
The seats are arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration. Interestingly, JAL uses a 2-4-2 layout for Economy Class on international Boeing 787 flights, but for domestic flights, they’ve adopted the 3-3-3 configuration, similar to other airlines.
The Complete Domestic Cabin

Here’s a view of the Economy Class cabin from the rear. Even on domestic flights, personal screens are provided for each seat.
In the earlier press conference, JAL executives mentioned that the introduction of the Boeing 787 on domestic routes, with its latest equipment and features, represents something of a completed model for JAL’s domestic seating. Key features include:
- • Personal seatback monitors
- • In-flight Wi-Fi Internet access
